Inaugural MMRC Run, or First Run, Cold Run

Intrepid runners of the MMRC Inaugural Group Run (from left): Dena, Blair (front), Tamara, Barefoot Josh, Iris (thanks, Photoshop!)

Allen Ginsberg once said, “First thought, best thought.” I guess I’m not a beat poet, because my first thought this morning was “go back to sleep.” Maybe the second thought would be better…

“It’s too cold outside.” Nope.

“Make coffee.” Ding ding ding! Third thought, best thought.

Iris and I managed to make our way to Farris Park, only one minute late. Let the record show: In attendance for the inaugural MadMayo Running Club Group Run were Josh (me) and Iris Sutcliffe, Dena and Blair Harris, and Tamara McLendon.

The sun had been up for maybe 20 minutes, and the lake was steaming. We were running into a Bob Ross painting. After about three-fourths of a mile we started to break up in our individual paces, and everyone ran between 60 and 70 minutes. We only stopped to sip some water, blow some noses, and do our best Gypsy Rose Lee impression, peeling off the layers as we warmed up.

There was little time for chit-chat after the run; our damp clothes were starting to freeze. The frost on my hat was very fashion-forward, I think. I might have to grow my beard long this winter, because what’s cooler than an ice beard? Or, for that matter, grosser, when you think about it?

It was a great start for the club.

The Route:
Farris Memorial Park, Mayodan.
1-mile loop around the pond. Scenic, rolling hills, good birding opportunities while running.

Iris is so tiny! And stepping on my decidedly non-barefoot toe!

Leaf-covered rocks + 32 degrees – ninja in my feet = vibram’s. Need more ninja in feet.

Ninja? In feet? I’m a simple caveman and don’t understand your ninja ways.

    Two thoughts:

    1. Iris IS tiny! And I’m, uh, not. That’s what I said when I saw that picture.

    3. Thanks for making it out there so early, guys. It was a beautiful morning, and a great way to start the club. :)

    And

    B. Blair is Nanook of the North, running around practically naked.

Here’s how clueless I am – I didn’t even catch that it was photoshopped until I read it. Um, yeah Dena, who was taking the picture then? I sense a “Big Duh” sort of nickname in my future.

That aside, lovely run, lovely friends, great start to the group!

Dena, either it was PhotoShopped or she’s a vampire. No shadow! Scary!

  6. MMRC on November 8, 2009 at 12:56 pm

    MMRC welcomes all—even vampires!

  7. Dena on November 10, 2009 at 2:28 pm

Ooh.. we must give Iris some “vampira” nickname in honor of her casting no shadow.

  8. MMRC on November 10, 2009 at 2:53 pm

As a former goth, that would be very appropriate!
