Oh yeah, some stuff happened last weekend… First, the Tamara and Harvey Crew were joined by Team Josh and Iris and new members Francisco and Jose for the first MadMayo Farris run of 2010. There was much running in circles, so many laps, in fact, I (Josh) was too tuckered out to attend the Beer Run that afternoon in Greensboro. Also, it would have meant skipping lunch. Lunch trumps beer—for me, anyway. Unfortunately, there are no pictures because I forgot the camera.
Dena, writing in third person as elite runners do, says:
“Dena, who has been MIA from recent MadMayo events, continues to train for the upcoming Boston Marathon. She’s been doing her Saturday long runs on the Greenway in Greensboro with another Boston qualifier who spends most of their runs together scaring Dena about the hills on the Boston course and the pounding her quads can expect to take. To compensate for a lack of hill work on her part, Dena is pinning her hopes on being bitten by a radioactive spider and gaining superhuman powers between now and race date. As a backup plan, she expects to cry and whine a lot. Dena (and her aching quads) are looking forward to putting marathon training behind and rejoining the MadMayo runners for some friendly group runs this summer.”
Meanwhile, Stefanie reports:
“I did run in the Human Race last Saturday and it was fantastic! I’m sure everyone that took the time to run on Saturday enjoyed it, as the weather was perfect. I was really shocked when I arrived at Grimsley and saw the entire track covered with walking teams. The walkers truly outnumbered us runners! The course was great. There were several hills, but they were spread out and there were lots of opportunities to recover in between them. The biggest obstacles were the cars. When we got into the residential areas, the police had not blocked the intersections and we were literally run off the roads a couple of times by impatient drivers. The group that I ended up pacing with had to stop at stop signs three different times because of the cars.
I’ve been working on saving energy for a big kick at the end and I was extremely proud of myself when I was able to spring the last 100 yards or so. My time wasn’t my best (32:12) but I had a great time, and that’s what it’s all about anyway. I was able to watch the walkers come in, and I was so surprised at the members of some of their teams. One group was leading a miniature horse! There were lots of dogs, and there was even a doggy station set up that had water and doggy treats. I met a beautiful Great Dane named Grover! There was a lot of food at the finish line for participants too. Hot dogs, popcorn, oranges, grapes, bananas, doughnuts—you name it, it was there. A band called Wishful Thinking played near the finish line and they were piping out boogie tunes to add to the spirit of the race. We ended up hanging around until noon. I hope you guys enjoyed your run as much as I did! Mark did not participate, but he did come and cheer me on at the finish. Have a great day!”
Thanks, Stefanie, we will! Until next weekend (27 hours from now), run a lot!
