Dena Beans Boston Marathon 2010

MMRCer Dena Harris kicked Boston Marathon butt this past Monday, finishing with a new PR of 3:41:47. Half the Triad was glued to their computers, watching the live race feed and hammering F5 to refresh the screen and follow her progress up and down the hills of Newton. Dena also wins the club award for Most Consistent Pace, clocking a second or two around 8:24-minute miles the whole way. Congratulations, Dena! DIY Natural Sports Drinks

Here at MMRC HQ, we’re always on the prowl for cheaper, healthier ways to fuel up before, during, and after our runs. We generally eschew chemical-laden bars, chews, and beverages, but there aren’t many good alternatives on the market—and they’re rarely on the shelves in our corner of the world! These easy recipes from Canyon [...]

S2H Replay Watch Review Update

UPDATE 4/24: The nice folks at S2H replaced my Replay in lightning speed and spotted me an hour for the time I lost from the wonky watch. Thanks! The new one works like a champ—keeps great time and logs all of my activity. I’m up to 30 hours as of today and still moving. I [...]

Coach Jenny: Make Friends with Hills

Run for the hills! No, seriously. Living in the Piedmont (literally “the foot of the mountain”), we know from hills. They ain’t easy, but they make us formidable foes on race day against a field of flatlanders. In this video, Coach Jenny Hadfield teaches runners of all levels to make friends with the hills and use them to our advantage both for everyday training and race-day results. Watch the video >>

Car Versus Elite Marathoner: Who Wins?

Let’s play a game. Get in your car and drive this weekend’s L.A. Marathon route all the way from Dodger Stadium, past Olvera Street and the Chinese Theater, down Sunset and Rodeo, eventually finding yourself gazing off the Santa Monica Pier at the vast, blue Pacific Ocean. How long do you think it’ll take you [...]

Would a Wii Motivate You?

Sticking with a training plan isn’t easy. I play all kinds of games with myself to get moving: “If I run two miles, I can enjoy this Pepsi.” “If I run two miles, my ‘thin pants’ will fit.” A couple weeks ago, I found new motivation while editing newsletters for iVillage: the Switch2Health Replay watch. [...]

Shepard Fairey Studio Designs L.A. Marathon Poster

Angelenos get all the cool stuff—and the poster for the sold-out 2010 L.A. Marathon (March 21) proves it. This year marks the marathon’s 25th anniversary, which calls for a very special poster. The design is by artist Cleon Peterson from Shepard Fairey‘s Studio Number One (Fairey’s the guy behind the ubiquitous Obey and Giant designs, [...]

Power Up the Tower for MS Raises $12,000

Climb MS: Power Up the Tower, where participants climbed a whopping 30 flights of stairs in the Winston Tower on March 6, raised over $12,000 for multiple sclerosis research and groups. More than 250 people registered for this quad-busting event—perhaps bolstered by the allure of an indoor event during our unseasonably cold winter, as well [...]
