Today’s race recap is by MadMayo Running Clubs’s youngest member, Andrea Zarate, age 9, recapping her first race ever, the Rockingham County GoFar 5K. Enjoy! My GoFar experience was like this… I woke up early (or my mom woke me up) and got ready. When we arrived, I was nervous. At least seeing Iris made me less nervous. We watched the little kids do their one-mile fun run. Finally it was time for our race, the 5K. We all lined up and got ready. Before lining up, me and Iris did a little warm-up. It took my mind off the race. Then we lined up and the race began! We all started running. As we progressed further we walked and ran, uphill and downhill. I felt not nervous at all. And at every water stop I drank all the water out of the cup. When you are given a chance to drink water during a race you take it. While we were running there were signs posted up to motivate you. One said “Run Your Guts Out.” And another one said something all runners need to be told. It was “Persevere.” An important word. After that me and Iris did [...]

Off season? Rest? Who does that? Certainly not these area runners. Check out how MadMayosians (and honorary MMians) spent the end of this winter: Local author Dena Harris and a hundred or so of her closest friends ran the Myrtle Beach Marathon. Dena beat her 3:40 goal with a fresh new PR of 3:38:38. Nice work! After a few days of resting on her laurels, Dena et al. rashly registered for November’s Rock & Roll Savannah Marathon. Local editor Iris Sutcliffe continued her quest to run a half marathon every month, making appearances on the trails at the Groundhog Gallop Trail Half Marathon at Northeast Park in Gibsonville, and again a few weeks later at Danville’s Green Legs & Hamstrings Trail Half Marathon. We’re wondering when Iris will learn from Dena’s experience and pick a flatter course for a change. Local artist/dog wrangler/barefoot advocate Barefoot Josh Sutcliffe proved that he’s always ready for a run. Ever the loyal husband, Josh joined Iris on the trails at the Groundhog Gallop Half and Green Legs & Hamstrings (although he wisely chose the 5K there and placed second overall). Between those races, Josh went for another little run—the Umstead Trail Marathon near Cary. [...]

MadMayo runners Barefoot Josh and spouse Iris Sutcliffe, and Lori and Tim Ratcliffe (and their girls) made the trip south to South Carolina in January for the Charleston Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K. They all enjoyed the perfectly flat course—a nice change of pace (literally!) from our local hills. Josh conquered the full marathon (sans shoes, of course), Iris and Lori enjoyed the half marathon, and Tim warmed up in 30-degree temps in the 5K. A good time was had by all! Read Barefoot Josh’s marathon recap (in three parts!) here, and here, and here >> Iris recaps her half marathon experience here >> You can see a few more photos here >> Full Charleston Marathon/Half Marathon/5K results are here >>

November 13 was a beautiful sunny day for a half marathon along the Riverwalk Trail greenway in nearby Danville, Virginia. With a start time of 11 a.m., there was plenty of time for breakfast, coffee, and stretching before the big event. Organizers and volunteers did a great job for the runners, ensuring plenty of water, Gatorade, and a running store-worthy assortment of energy gels throughout the course. There was a giant cauldron of stew waiting at the finish line, and the Bright Leaf Brew Fest was mere steps away (and at a discount for runners). If you’re looking for a good local half marathon next fall, you can’t go wrong with Danville. MMRCer Barefoot Josh Sutcliffe placed ninth overall and won his age group with a stellar new PR of 1:32:39. His effort garnered a fantastically large commemorative beer mug, which was put to use shortly after the race. Iris Sutcliffe, in her second half marathon after her Asheville debut, placed somewhat farther back in the pack with a PR of 2:27:04 (130/152). Danville marks the first event in her HM-a-month streak, scheduled to continue through December 2011. Local elite runner Jay Jones, who claimed before the race that long-distance [...]

September 17 and 18 saw members of the MadMayo Running Club hammering out a collective 221.1 miles. MMRCers Barefoot Josh Sutcliffe, Dena Harris, and Nathan Daughtry ran the 208-mile Blue Ridge Relay Race with nine other runners from the Virginia border to downtown Asheville. On September 18, a few hours prior to team MG Easy's arrival, Christine DeLorenzo and Iris Sutcliffe crossed the finish line of the super-hilly Asheville Half Marathon.
MadMayosians and friends whipped themselves into a frenzy at the Beat the Heat 5K in Winston-Salem. Barefoot Josh imported his speedy runner friends AC and Wayne from the eastern part of the state. Wayne nabbed himself a cool mug for his efforts. Lori and Iris also scorched the route, earning Iris a PR and Lori the title of Best Coach Ever. Also, barfing and near-barfing was involved (and that was before the beer and pizza!), so you know it was a good time. Recaps right this way >>
