All levels of runners, run/walkers, and walkers are invited. We start together, but everyone goes at their own pace for as much time/distance as they like. Making time for these outings is a great way to keep your fitness plan on track—and meet new workout buddies!

First on the season’s agenda: Farris Park loops every third Saturday of the month, beginning February 20 March 20. The Farris Park trail is a gravel and dirt one-mile loop with a few small hills. The loop is about a mile, which makes it easy to know how far you’ve gone. The McMichael High School cross country team regularly trains at Farris, so you know it’s a good workout.

Who: Runners, run/walkers, and walkers. Dogs on leashes are welcome. Farris Park is also a great place to run/walk with your kids!
What: Monthly group run/walk
Where: Farris Park (see map here); meet in the parking lot by the snack bar
When: Third Saturday of every month, starting February March 20
Time: We’ll start running at 10:00 a.m. Arrive a few minutes early for hellos and stretching. If you’re late, just start running or walking. Run or walk as long as you like, for as many loops as you like.

Other important info: This is a casual group meetup, which means you should bring your own beverages and snacks. There’s no charge to meet up with MMRC for group run/walks, and you don’t need to register—just show up. Participation is at your own risk.

Then you might be interested in Climb MS: Power Up the Tower on March 6 in Winston-Salem. It’s a chip-timed climb up 30 flights of stairs in Winston Tower. That’s right—30 flights of stairs. We don’t know how that translates to miles, but we do know that it means a mighty workout for your quads, lungs, and heart! Full info is at ClimbMSTriad.org.

Coincidentally, right next door to Winston Tower is the Reynolds Building (at left in the photo), which is a smaller version of the Empire State Building—the location of the New York Road Runners Empire State Run-Up. That one’s 86 flights, so consider the Winston your warm-up.

At last, the route is unveiled! This route shows off some of our favorite places around Madison. We begin with a hill, tour the historic district where we stop to TP Royce and Dena's houses (kidding!), traverse a surprising pastoral scene, and finish along the river. Please remember that this is a casual club run, not an organized 5K. Bring your own beverages and snacks, be prepared for traffic, and enjoy a fun run with new friends. Click here for date, time, meeting place, and more…

Unless the ranks cry out in dissent, here is the loop for the November 21 MadMayo Running Club group run. A smidge over 3 miles, the route begins… with a hill. Why? Because some of us like to eat our brussels sprouts first and save the tasty pudding for last. In this case, the pudding takes the form of a scenic, flat finish near the river that brings us to the finish. Did you know that stretch along the river is part of the North Carolina Birding Trail? It’s a great spot for warbler watching during spring and fall migration.

Things to Know:
This is a casual club run, not a formal run, meaning no registration, no medals, no timing besides your watch. There are no water stations, no support staff. Roads will be open as this is an informal event: Watch out for and yield to cars/pedestrians/squirrels. We are all running at our own risk. Please arrived prepared to run accordingly: Bring your own beverages, snacks, etc.

MMRC is a loosely organized group of MadMayo residents—this is an informal club run where we all run as a group of friends. We’re looking forward to meeting new running buddies and hope you’ll join us for future group runs—and help us get the word out! The current group includes runners of varying speeds and abilities, so there’s someone to pace with no matter how fast or slow you run.

• Start and finish at the intersection of Murphy and Dalton Streets.
• The stretch along Decatur should be run on the sidewalk.
• We’ll be passing through Madison’s historic district on Hunter.
• The loop south of Academy is on gravel and will make you think you’re out in the country. Watch for bluebirds!
• The river loop begins with an unmanned, ungated, unlighted railroad crossing. LOOK BEFORE YOU CROSS!
• Most important, let’s hope for great running weather like this weekend!

See you at the intersection of Murphy and Dalton, 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 21.

We’ll run three miles (give or take) around the metropolis of Madison. There will be a few hills, as well as a scenic stretch along the Dan River.

We’ve timed this group run to coincide with ShineFest, which is the brainchild of the Southern Culture Society, so you might want to hang out in downtown Madison for the day to enjoy old-time music, arts and crafts, BBQ (woot!), adult beverages, and even meet racing and moonshine legend Junior Johnson! Honestly, any time MMRC can schedule a group run around BBQ, moonshine, and Junior Johnson is a banner day. Join us! The full press release with meeting info is below.
